But first, did you know that AARP has reported that there are over 40 million unpaid family caregivers in the U.S.?
Unpaid family caregivers, on average, spend $6,954 annually on out-of-pocket costs related to caregiving. For an average caregiver, that’s an astounding 20 percent of their annual income. Caregivers are a big part of ensuring a patient can safely and comfortably stay at home while maintaining a high quality of life, shouldn’t we be supporting caregivers and patients better?
Thanks to the Consumer Directed Personal Assistance Program (CDPAP), caregivers are able to get compensated for their one-of-a-kind care. This means less financial stress for caregivers and better care for patients. It’s a win-win! And, if you’re already enrolled on a Medicaid Managed Care plan you’re halfway there!
CDPAP is a Medicaid Program, so to qualify patients must be enrolled in (or qualify for) Medicaid. They must also require support from an assistant or in-home caregiver. The only downside to CDPAP, if there is one at all, is that there is a fair amount of paperwork required. The program does put the burden on the consumer to maintain records. The silver lining is, you don’t actually have to do all of that paperwork yourself; you can partner up with a state-approved agency.
The best way to find out if you’re eligible for CDPAP, and then to get started, is to choose a company that is a designated Fiscal Intermediary to partner with. Here at Special Touch Home Care, we’ve been providing quality and professional in-home care services for over 40 years. We bring this vast experience to the table in supporting patients and families looking to self-manage care. We’re able to offer information and support, process paperwork and payments, and so much more!
